Blue Note by Benjamin Moore Rich blue wall paint helps tie together a range of styles in this New York City townhouse. “This was a really successful color — it made a great background for our mix of antiques, vintage and modern pieces. It really served to anchor them in a unifying surrounding,” architect and interior designer Joan Dineen says. “I think it is really unique in that ability.” The designer also notes that the color can change along with the time of day. “It also responds beautifully to changes in light,” she says. “At night it is quite restrained and elegant, and daylight brings out its exuberance — we love it!”
Designer Joan Enger of J. Patryce Design says that mixing new and vintage furniture and accessories was important to make this Hoboken, New Jersey, living room shine. “We really enjoyed the opportunity to mix in the owners’ original antiques with more modern elements,” Enger says. The contemporary sofa and pair of vintage Jens Risom chairs were reupholstered and placed around a vintage Karl Springer textured coffee table. A custom hand-knotted rug and floor-to-ceiling draperies in a Holly Hunt silk set the tone for the room’s neutral palette.

The new built-in walnut media console matches the kitchen island. Lindstrom balanced the splurge on walnut by using less expensive poplar on the new fireplace surround and staining it dark.
“We wanted to avoid mounting the TV above the fireplace, but we still wanted the ability to enjoy both at the same time,” Stewart says. “We also wanted it lower in the space. Although we explored several solutions, we ended on a simple built-in row of low stained walnut cabinets for the TV to sit on. Of the solutions we explored, this was the simplest and most flexible.”

there’s no reason a TV has to be mounted above the fireplace. The team at Legacy Builders Group instead mounted the TV to the side of the fireplace and added a built-in cabinet underneath to conceal TV equipment.

Ottawa - walnut veneer covers up TV when not in use: Graham used a standard black barn door rail to mount the door. But instead of placing the rail hardware on the front of the door as it is typically done, she put it on the back so it doesn’t show. “I wanted a much cleaner, modern look,” she says. Aligning the fireplace, TV and adjacent shelves took careful work to be sure everything fit precisely. First the tiler installed the black slate tiles for the fireplace surround. Next came the box that holds the TV in the wall. Then came the mantel, followed by the display cabinet to the right of the television. The last steps were installing the door and the slats on the wall above the door. Local cabinetmaker Mike Hilchie made the door, mantel and display cabinet shelves and installed them to line up precisely.
The reading nook contains a twin-size mattress for an extra overnight guest, and features built-in storage and reading lights. Just past the nook, the black door handle is the only clue that there’s a door in the wall of reclaimed snow fencing. It opens to a closet that houses the extra dining chair
The sofa base has three covered pullout drawers. Thanks to the covers, the drawers can serve as coffee tables while storing items like bed linens, documents and electronics.
