Lighting

Natural Lighting. Light that comes from the sun. In different seasons and times, the color temperature of natural lighting is different. Natural light can also be affected by interior, for example - a stained glass window.

Task Lighting. Lighting that is meant to serve a particular task. In this image, the lighting is task lighting for reading.

Accent Lighting. Lighting used to accentuate a particular feature. Here, the artwork is being accentuated.

Ambient Lighting. A form of general lighting where the light source is hidden and not obvious.

Grazing. When a light is very close to the wall, both lighting the space but also to emphasize the texture of the wall.

Perimeter Lighting. Lights placed around the perimeter of a space, so that lighting is even all around with no harsh highlights.

Up Lighting. Ambient lighting where the light source shines upward.

Cove Lighting. Lighting that is built into ledges of the wall or dropped down ledges of the ceiling, so that the light source is hidden.

Recessed Lighting. A type of lighting fixture that is installed into the ceiling or wall

Wall Washing. Lights are set close to the wall, but further away from the wall compared to "grazing", and provides a uniform "wash" of light on the walls.

Drop Lighting. A light fixture that drops from the ceiling.

Sconce. A light fixture that is attached to the wall.

2x2 fixture or 2x4 fixture. 2 feet by 2 feet or 2 feet by 4 feet light fixtures. Typically used in offices.

Incandescent Bulb. A traditional light bulb that emits light and heat by heating up a filament. They are energy inefficient, so are no longer the most commonly used light bulbs, but are sometimes still used for decorative reasons.

Fluorescent Bulb. An energy efficient bulb that does not emit heat.
