The fireplace surround is concrete-look porcelain tile, and the mantel is steel. “To warm up the space, we added reclaimed barn wood to the walls above the built-ins,” Van Sluyter says. “The white floating shelves pop against the dark wood and are a place for the family to display items that are personal to them.”

most people would agree that the many wires needed to connect to the cable box, power, etc., are better unseen. Installing a few pieces of molding on the wall can create an elegant channel for all of those pesky wires to run through until they can reach an outlet or other device as needed, while also adding some classic appeal.

Triggs felt that with a fireplace surround of waxed leather extending all the way to the high ceiling, she had few options for anything that could compete with it as a focal point. Instead, she played it up even more by creating a clear path to it, flanked by two custom sofas. A barely there coffee table also keeps the visual weight on the fireplace, while a satin brass chandelier accentuates its height.

The surround includes a recessed niche with wood bookshelves that line up with the panel seams for a cohesive look.
To avoid ending up with a mass that could crack, Emam designed the surround to include a dozen custom concrete panels. Anthony Concrete Design fabricated the extra-large-format tiles with a distressed finish to create a raw, textured look that’s artistically broken up symmetrically by seams.
For a totally different approach, you have the contemporary collage style of hanging art in a way that appears almost random. Note that in this example, however, several of the frame edges do line up with one another so that the composition looks loose and artistic but not like complete chaos.
When clustering several small items on a fireplace, it helps to have some structure to guide you. One idea to try is a loose pyramid or triangle. By putting the tallest or largest object in the center and building the smaller items out from there, you develop a sense of symmetry even if the objects aren’t truly symmetrical. Layering items in front of one another builds out your pyramid and gives lots of dynamic energy to the composition. Shift around the pieces until the composition feels just right, but don’t get too fussy — asymmetry isn’t meant to be perfect.
In most cases, when using a large piece of art, it’s best to choose one that is about 65 to 80 percent of the width of the mantel, for an elegant fit that looks correctly proportional.
