I know these are modern, but you could always add something like this to match your cabinets in the dining room.
here's a nice layout with no uppers. stainless hood would look good here, too.
I think you were saying something about a grey island. This is very pretty and would look good with the stainless hood.
this dark island looks formal and nice. this designer never uses uppers!

Wood on island warm and informal. Not sure about that when open to living room though.
