Japanese Cherry
The flowers seen in the photo are Siberian Iris, specifically Iris siberica 'Ceasar's Brother'. This Iris species does enjoy moist, even boggy situations, similar to the way that Japanese Iris (Iris ensata) will, but the flowers and foliage are different. Iris ensata has a much broader, almost flat topped flower. Iris ensata folage is also heavier and more sword like.The falls are beardless but enormous - they make me think of silk banners. Iris siberica has a flower which more closely resembles its cousin, the German iris, but it is much more delicate and refined. The foliage of Iris siberica is also more delicate, almost grass like and is a great asset to the garden as it changes through the seasons - from a beautiful spring green to an awesome gold/russet in autumn. Iris siberica is also a great "clumper". It will produce thick stands which will actually crowd out weeds!
Two of the plants used between the steppers are Sedum acre and Thymus serpyllum ‘Alba’.
The bright green plant seen growing in the joints between steppers is Sedum acre, also called Gold Moss and Wall Pepper. It is a low growing succulent, rarely taller than 4”, which spreads by rhizomes. The succulent nature of the plant allows it to store water in its leaves, making it happiest when planted in hot, very well drained conditions. Although wonderfully suited to rock gardens due to this characteristic, its rhizomatous habit can make it a bit of a nuisance if planted where it can escape into nearby lawn. It has a very pretty flower in summer which resembles a yellow star and in autumn the foliage takes on a reddish colour. The white flowered plant growing in the joints nearby is Thymus serpyllum 'Albus' or White Creeping Thyme.
The graceful branches of Summer Wine ninebark need little pruning to keep an attractive shape. Its dark foliage, fine texture, and mid-summer blooms make it a prized landscape shrub. 5-6' (1.5-1.8 m) tall and wide. Full Sun. USDA Zones 3-7
